First Things First

This is the age of technology and for the beginner in Genealogy technology will save you countless hours of research and documentation. To benefit from this technology you will need a computer (laptops are outselling desktops) and a software program to collect and record your data.

Family Tree Maker from Family Tree Magazine (they have both Mac and PC Versions) is among the better programs on the market. What makes this program so useful is its ability to sync with your family tree on ancestry.com

I recommend that you purchase a membership in ancestry, at least for the first year or two that you are doing family research. It will allow you to build your tree at incredible speed.
